Flashback Friday: Total Eclipse of the Heart

For those who don’t know, I love me a good cover song. Today’s Flashback Friday pick is a Sleeping at Last’s quietly sad version of “Total Eclipse of the Heart.”  When vocalist Ryan O’Neal sings the line, “once upon a time I was falling in love, now I’m only falling apart,” I can almost imagine him crying little emo tears into his piano. This is a good thing, trust me.

For reference, below is Bonnie Tyler’s original version of “Total Eclipse of the Heart” from 1982. The first time I heard this song was actually in high school. We had a school assembly to teach us about the dangers of drug use (for some reason, we never had D.A.R.E.  I never took the D.A.R.E. pledge!) where the Men of War ripped phone books in half on stage and did a performance to Bonnie Tyler’s hit song. For some reason, I want to say they had their faces painted like KISS for the performance, but maybe it was just the drugs talking (naaaaah, just kidding).

By the way, why are there ninjas in this video? I’m not even kidding. Fast forward to 1:24 if you don’t believe me.
